Working on a blog about a topic close to my heart…giving.
But have you ever had an idea incessantly knock at the door to your mind? The more you ignore it and hope it goes away the louder it knocks? I cave and put my giving blog aside momentarily and move on to ashes…
The most recent and final Harry Potter movie is now in theatres and I’m excited. Not because I’m one of those dress up like Hermione and attend the first midnight showing types. But because my son started reading Harry Potter in first grade and we had a wonderful connection discussing the books and how they compared to the movies.
I was thinking back to the second in the series- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. One of my favorite aspects of the movie was in the stunning effects. My son and I were enthralled with how the phoenix came to heal Harry at the end. The phoenix is a mythical bird that ignites at the end of a life cycle, is burned, reduced to ashes, and born to live again. Did I mention it had magical healing powers? I would assume that even the least imaginative among us would find this at least mildly fascinating. My son found it “extremely cool”.
Why the incessant knocking was that of a phoenix, I am not certain…but there it is.
Have you ever felt as if you were in the ‘ashes’ part of your life? In the crisis. Deep in the heart of pain, change, loss, collapse…and learning? Have you ever felt that moment when everything around you was singed, crumbling, and dying….and yet you felt a strange, ill-timed hope?
That, my friend, is your phoenix.
We all have them. Some of us more than others. But that moment when everything around you is disintegrating and your heart says “no”. Softly at first. But quickly the volume rises to a deafening roar. NO!!!!!!! I will not go quietly into the night…sounds like a Mary Oliver poem.
That moment in the ashes when the beautiful flower grows against all reason…that is what life is all about.
We are stronger than we know.
We are braver than thought possible.
We have the power to learn and grow and become more, not in spite of our challenges but because of them. In this I believe whole heartedly.
Action step: If you are struggling, give into it. Give yourself permission to sit and feel the flower, the hope, the phoenix within. And allow the new, stronger, more beautiful you to arise.
