What did you do this past holiday weekend? Did you sit back, relax, and enjoy the beautiful weather as well as stimulating conversation with friends and family?
Did you run around to back to back baseball and Lacrosse games? Stress about whether the house was clean for guests? And work??
I have been known (picture me sheepishly scuffing my foot in the gravel) to keep going and going and doing and fixing and running and such…until my body gives out, or some very nice person, picks me up and sits me down in a chair and sticks a glass of wine in my hand.
I recognize my challenges and have been striving to fix this deficiency in my character. I have actually (gasp!) asked people for help lately. I have shut down the computer and watched a silly movie. I have taken a week-long vacation with no computer and only checked messages once a day!!
Guess what?? The world kept turning. People kept breathing. And life went on as if this colossal lack of productivity never even happened. Wow.
And here’s the super, secret, massive epiphany….I was more productive after taking the necessary downtime.
The body, the mind, and the spirit need to renew and rejuvenate in order to effectively function. Just as we need sleep and sustenance to restore our physical body, we also need hopes, love, and joy to replenish our souls.
When I work too hard, I get run down and lose my ability to effectively navigate the numerous responsibilities in my life. When I take time to recharge my batteries I am more creative, industrious, and truth be told…a heck of a lot more fun to be around!
A lesson learned from hard won experience. So when Grandma said, “I can talk ‘til I’m blue in the face but you have to make your own mistakes, Honey….” she wasn’t kidding.
“So as long as a person is capable of self-renewal, they are a living being.” Henri Frederic Amiel
