Climb mountains, swim with sharks, jump out of airplanes? No problem. But feel the heart pounding reality that I might not be able to save my child? Nothing on earth has scared me more.
I grew up swimming for hours in the ocean. They used to call me ‘the dolphin’. Hunger was typically the only thing that could tear me away from the water. Parents would offer warnings, friends would express fears, but I have never been scared of it.
Until this week.
My 9 year old son and I were riding the waves in the Gulf of Mexico. At one point he slipped a bit farther out and looked like he was struggling. I immediately swam to him and asked if he was ok. He said he couldn’t stand and in that instant I realized I couldn’t either. I swam my hardest, holding him up as the waves crashed over me, and I just couldn’t seem to make any headway.
We called out and I saw a man up ahead waving to us. I dug down, battled the waves, and pushed my son toward the man. The ocean pulled me out as I watch him grab my boy and take him to safety.
With the adrenalin rush gone, and the knowledge my son was safe, I turned on my back and let the ocean take me. In the few seconds it took to gather my strength, I realized how tenuous life is…and how much more I am willing to give for those three little creatures to which I gave life than anything else in the world.
It’s why I drive slower with them in the car. Why it hurts so very much when they call me mean mommy for giving them a time out. Why I believe in demonstrating that dreams are meant to be followed…
Life is precious. What are you waiting for? Live full out every moment…focusing on what’s really important. People are important, dreams are important, following your heart is important. Everything else finds a way of working out.
Live, Love, Give, BE. Find Your Fire!
Action Step: Look around you. Take a moment to list the top things in your life that should be receiving your attention. Are they receiving it? Tell someone important that you love them. Go on…right now. Call them up or give them a hug. Life’s too short not to live it.
