…As the Wind Blows Out Candles and Kindles Fires

In like a lion…

The blustering wind whips my hair around my face. I hear the clink of a can carried down the street by a force beyond its control. I stand still compelled to resist the wind pressing upon me. And I think.

"Adversity is like a strong wind. It tears away from us all but the things that cannot be torn, so that we see ourselves as we really are." Arthur Golden

I think a foreign thought to someone who has led her life with a desire to control. I realize there’s something more. What if there’s beauty in occasionally giving in to a greater power?

A pile of leaves. A hat on a boy’s head. A businessman’s newspaper. The clouds in the sky. All powerless to the wind. I hear the word ‘powerless’ and I cringe. Recently a wise friend told me, “Conventional wisdom tells us to be fearful of things that render us powerless but…” What if…

What if we let go of our ego, our preconceptions, our illusion of control, and simply trust? Trust our emotions to guide us for a change. Trust an overwhelming love that makes us feel vulnerable. Trust a gut instinct to protect the people closest to us. Trust the desire to give. Trust change. Trust the inherent goodness in people.

According to the Buddhist philosophy one of the primary steps to enlightenment is to let go of our attachments. In 12 step programs the healing and recovery occurs only after you give up control to a higher power. In what facet of your life might it benefit you to give up a little control?

“There’s a whisper on the night-wind, there’s a star agleam to guide us, and the wild is calling, calling…let us go.” Anon

…Out like a lamb.

Action Step: For today- allow the wind to blow away your fear. Be open to your own feelings. Be open to the thoughts of others. Be open to the lessons that surround you.

Great blog, Heather! We humans tend to be control freaks. We definitely need to relinquish that desire.

  2. I love this post, Heather. It is all about letting go to allow the wind to send abundance our way. When we hold on to outcomes or ego, we miss out on all the beauty that could be waiting to be discovered right in front of us. Thank you for this great reminder!
